The relationship between foreign trade and political conflict has been a persistent source of controversy among scholars of international relations. Existing empirical studies of this topic have focused on the effects of trade flows on conflict, but they have largely ignored the institutional context in which trade is conducted.   O’Shea, Paul. “How economic, strategic and domestic factors shape patterns of conflict and cooperation in the East China Sea dispute,” Asian Survey (), Papayoanou, Paul. “Interdependence, institutions and the balance of power: Britain, Germany and World War I,” International Security (), Pinker, Steven.

But in light of the apparent West European commitment to continue and expand trade with the East, as exemplified by the Siberian gas pipeline project, and the growing U.S. opposition to such technology transfer, divisions between U.S. and Western trade policies toward the East are likely to become increasingly acute in the years ahead.   Alan Greenspan has triggered yet another wave of global suspicion that the US went to war to steal Iraq's oil for itself. This was not the thrust of his book, or his later remarks, but the net impact has been to focus the world's attention on the issue. The attached briefing puts the reality in perspective. The US cannot steal Iraq's oil in any meaningful way. Iraq almost certainly has far.

Strategic interdependence recognises that, in the context of globalisation and digitisation, reality is complex. According to this perspective, security is not differentiation from the Other or part of the framework of classical friend/foe thinking in the sense of Carl Schmidt, but the result of a complex process of integration in trade.
